Philomena
Philomena: beautiful, moving and incredibly heartbreaking, but I’m convinced, now more than ever, one can ultimately find peace through heartache and despair. If this story doesn’t tug at your heartstrings, you’re dead inside. What a journey between a believer and nonbeliever, and still I think both can coexist, minus the judgments.
The abuse of power in religion becomes more disturbing by the day. Too many people manipulate God’s purported word. Anytime someone intentionally sets out to disparage, discourage or upset another human being, be warned that it is a form of control and a scare tactic. I feel heartbroken for individuals who feel the need to project their guilt, fear, shame and hurt onto others. I have met too many clueless wonders that use religion as a crutch, and that’s why, at times, I use the word cult.
It begins and ends with you, and you alone. Believe in yourself. Think for yourself. By all means – have faith, and as much as you have faith in yourself, have faith in others. Judging someone else’s life (in any way, shape or form) is the most un-Christian thing you can do.
Search for the positive. Too many of us are focused on the negative, but if that’s what you have been taught. Let’s just say, I’m hopeful for a new day.
Our feelings towards each other must be genuine, our interactions pure and unadulterated. For a clear thinking person this is an innate quality, I believe. For others, manipulation has beaten them down, and they typically can only speak in catch phrases/bumper stickers, which I often find robotic.
Our respect and human dignity must rise to the surface with each person we meet. One must abandon those self-righteous, self-centered and self-destructive feelings because our concentration must always be on what we have in common. That is what we must share and celebrate, at all cost, and it will keep us united and strong in times of strife. That’s the best way to honor anyone’s God, by spotlighting the good. Don’t you think?
I guess Philomena left me a bit philosophical. – paerki
A few of my favorite quotes from the movie:
Sister Hildegarde: “The Lord Jesus Christ will be my judge, not the likes of you.” Martin Sixsmith: “Really? Because I think if Jesus was here right now he'd tip you out of that fucking wheelchair and you wouldn't get up and walk.”
Philomena: “I forgive you because I don't want to remain angry.”
Martin Sixsmith: “It’s funny isn't it? All the pieces of paper designed to help you find him have been destroyed, but guess what, the one piece of paper designed to stop you finding him has been lovingly preserved. God and his infinite wisdom decided to spare that from the flames.”
