BMA: Juan Gris
I decided to visit the Baltimore Museum of Art this morning. Lucky for me it is just three blocks from my home. The walk, fresh air and people watching, to and from the museum, was as nurturing to my spirit as the art.
The Color and Illusion: The Still Lifes of Juan Gris exhibition was interesting. I don’t know much about cubist painting, but was intrigued enough by his work. I appreciate the interlocking arrangements of lines, shapes and patterns.
It must be said, I have a love / hate relationship with abstract art, but as I age I find myself more open to the "abstract experience". Rather than trying to figure out what the painting looks like, I now examine the color, shapes, materials, etc., to guide me to see what emotions and sensations it might be trying to convey.
I can’t say it enough, take advantage of the museums in your city. Visit them often to broaden your horizons. They provide us with a sense of our place in the world. They provoke us to think creatively, beyond ourselves. You’re guaranteed to be inspired.
I visit museums, and often, because I find beauty there, a sense of peace and great fulfillment, and yes, escapism from our assaulting world. Know this, you don’t need an education to appreciate the vast world of art. Imagination is helpful.
On a different note, don’t allow the pandemic to keep you away from the museums. As we continue to navigate through the pandemic, allow science to help guide your personal actions. In other words, wear a mask, practice social distancing and please, please get vaccinated.
I am wishing all who read my words an arty new year. – paerki
