You Treated Me Well
In my clinical research career, and the one-off jobs I took because I either had too much time on my hands or was bored, I never pursued management. But over the years management routinely found me. I was always promoted because people saw something in me that I did not necessarily see in myself. I am thankful and appreciative of each opportunity that came my way, never taking any of them for granted.
As for the people who pursued me for such endeavors, they remain larger than life leaders whom I continue to look up to, admiring them mostly because they are strong, practical, and driven by team spirit. You are only as good as your team, a mantra that was passed down to me by many.
History is now repeating itself. I am 16 months in my not so new job, and once again I have been invited to the management table. I was offered this opportunity many months ago and declined (not once, but twice).
Then another offer was made, and I accepted. I was not playing hard to get, holding out for more money because depending on who you are, just having health benefits is worth its weight in gold. I know it is for me. That is why I work.
I am sharing this here because I want to remember this as the year of new opportunities. Like no time before, I am truly in a place where I am meant to be. In addition to my work happiness, I live in a fabulous space that at times is magical, partly because of my view. It is cozy, and when the world becomes less than kind, I can retreat and find solitude, which translates into moments of pure joy.
The joy I speak of is that which I give to myself. Joy for me is permission – permission to engage or be alone, to do nothing and everything, and to always be aware of my self-care needs. Self-care is critical to our wellbeing, especially as we age.
These days I try my best to do what I love, those things that help me feel alive inside. My needs are simple. There are days when I cannot get enough peace and quiet. I cherish quality alone time. Other days, I want to be outdoors breathing in the fresh air and walking/hiking. (Not a simple walk, but those that last for hours. I can easily travel 30-miles in a day and do!)
And, as for my job, and it is worth repeating, many times over, I really am in a place where I am meant to be. I genuinely like everyone I work with… EVERYONE! From the direct reports to the team leaders, to the managers, to the directors to the top-level management – everyone is kind and works hard.
As for our fabulous residents, they bring much joy to my world. They are my masterclass, and I do not think they realize just how much they are teaching me. It is through their shared wisdom and life lessons that I will hopefully age with dignity and grace.
Thank you, 2023. You treated me well. May 2024 be just as kind, and not just to me, but to you too, friends. – paerki
