The Terrace Garden That Could
It was a mitzvah of love between friends, setting out to create a little oasis in the city to relax in during late spring, and summer and early fall. What we achieved is vibrant, inspiring, and meditative. This modest, elegant little terrace garden has with it the power to make a bad day better, but you must be willing to yield to its significance – worth. Dare to gaze its way and find yourself smiling. It will motivate any morning, and calm a weary spirit after a long hard day at work. Passersby are afforded this opportunity daily with these illuminating metaphors of nature.
On Wednesday, my friend and I began our day with an early morning trip to the country in search of flowers. What we received in return was so much more. It was the perfect day traveling by car down winding roads and over rolling hills, while marveling at farmland. We were in awe of the harvested fields, lush green plains, wildlife and other animals (horses, cows, etc.) as we talked, laughed and relished in each other's company. There was even a bit of excitement when a deer crossed our path. We were seconds shy of catastrophe. We really dodged a bullet.
Our goals were simple – to find bright, colorful, healthy and inexpensive flowers. What we found was amazing, truly! Bressler Nursery & Landscaping was the diamond in the rough, a small family-owned business that will give anyone a bang for their buck. I really was impressed with the quality, from the merchandise to the service, I couldn't ask for better. Debbie, thank you for your warm smile, sunny attitude, and quality products. These days it's hard finding all of these traits in one company and you succeeded, standing out with ease, and I'll definitely be sending customers your way.
We were looking for a place for lunch, and Debbie recommended the Sunshine Grill. You were right – Good food! Soon after we were on the road making a few more pit stops and then ultimately back to my friend's home to get dirty.
We spent the afternoon gardening in the hot sun – turning dirt and planting, breaking pots to help with water filtration, filling flowerboxes and other containers, climbing up and down the ladder, hanging baskets, rearranging garden furniture, pruning, watering, etc. You would think with a small terrace garden there wouldn't be so much to do, but there was, hours worth! This is what I crave every day, nature's natural therapy to keep me in balance and thriving.
After all was said and done, we took time to relax, appreciating the fruits of our labor. We sat on the terrace remarking on the beauty before us, while replaying the day and talking my favorite topics – life, love and the pursuit of happiness. A glass of wine enhanced that which will remain in my heart forever. It was time to call it a day, and it ended just the way it began with a smile, a hug and the love of a friend. It doesn't get any better than this!
I could go on and on in great detail describing this wonderful adventure, but the following phrase says it all, "I had a good day!" It was simple by far, but it was joyous. You can have all the wild fun, and crazy days you want, but just give me those that are nurturing, that involve a good friend or two, and conversation with words that leave me wanting more.
To my dear friend, Hannah, you are joy, and the inspiration you gave to me, I in turn will pass it along, and those who walk by your little slice of heaven in the city, will definitely know joy too if they dare look up and over, seeing what we see in the terrace garden that could. – paerki
