Cabin Fever
I know many people – friends, family and coworkers, who are experiencing cabin fever – decreased motivation, sadness, trouble concentrating, etc., because they feel a sense of powerlessness, and all because of COVID. (Pandemic fatigue is real. Word to the wise, control it before it controls you.)
I understand their weariness and anxiety because I was also climbing the walls, if just a little. What helps minimize my restlessness and frustrations are long walks. Walking keeps the mind moving in a positive direction, while helping you gain back some control.
What also contributes to our exhaustion and impatience is the news. I hold the rule, too much of anything can prove unhealthy. Moderation is key to a healthier life. News can take its toll on our mental health. Stop binge-watching, remembering all news is not equal. Choose vetted sources.
All things considered, this pandemic year wasn’t too bad, I contribute this to some special people in my life, my "COVID Bubble Friends". Thank you for the many hikes and walks, small safe gatherings of friends for cocktail hours and for the weekend brunches.
To a few besties, I feel like our recent weekend getaway was more than a celebration of a certain someone’s birthday, although that was reason enough. (Dear friend, you are worthy of a celebration every day. I hope this year marks a fresh start. Dream big because anything is possible. Sometimes, to preserve one’s sanity, hard choices must be made.)
It was nice letting our hair down, speaking freely about those things in our life that need resolution. I appreciated our shared opinions and words of advice. I walked away feeling hopeful, and I hope you did too.
Know this, dear reader, physical activity is a cure for cabin fever. Add to that, a few special friends, and you’ll be okay. – paerki
