World Animal Day (2013)
Today is World Animal Day. Keep loving animals and spread the word of hope, so that we may protect all from evil predators. Clairol, Noxell and many other companies continue to use animals for testing.
There must be harsher penalties for those who are cruel to animals, and we need to be more involved with our local agencies, like the SPCA, to make this happen. Kudos to those volunteers who continue to make a difference.
Ten debated areas of animal cruelty, which requires each of us to check our moral compass: Fur Trade, Animal Testing, Dolphin & Whale Slaughter, Seal Clubbing, Animals in Medicine, Animals as Food, Animals in Sport, Pedigree Breeding, Zoos, and Animals in Film. I’m not extreme in my thinking when it comes to my perception of what we need to do, but I do know right from wrong, and what’s appropriate and what’s not. I hope you know, too!
An interesting statistic I read recently: Animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse. How sad is that?!
If you ever contemplate getting an animal, I hope you’ll think long and hard and consider adopting one at a local shelter in your area. Why not rescue a greyhound? Then, as always, have your new pet spayed and/or neutered.
Ways We Can All Save Animals: Never give animals as a gift. A better bond is developed when an animal selects the owner, without someone playing matchmaker. Take notice and take action when you see an animal being mistreated. Support a local shelter. A donation of $10 per year can make all the difference in the world. Provide consistent exercise for your pets. These are just a few things we can do. Education is key.
Here’s to all of you who love and cherish animals. Thank you for taking time out to care for the pet of a friend or neighbor. Some of my favorite people in the world are those who, when walking down the street, will stop and acknowledge another person’s furry bundle of love – petting, rubbing and talking to that which occasionally is misunderstood.
I can’t end this post without saying animals are indispensable. They deserve the same amount of love (if not more) as humans. If you’re ever inclined to go to the grocery store, don’t bring your dog along only to be chained to a fence (or any place), making it wait for you. How would you like to be chained and waiting? I didn’t think so! – paerki
