Modest Celebration
During the past few weeks I tried to keep the momentum going, posting past photos on my social media sites while counting down the days to my favorite holiday, Halloween.
Well, the day has finally arrived, and here I am, celebrating in the most simplistic way – a long walk (12 miles to be exact), while enjoying the holiday decorations in my neighborhood. Add to that watching parents snap photos of their children in costume, last minute decorating, children trick-or-treating (way too early in the day), beautiful autumn tones with leaves falling from the trees and the crunch of them underfoot, the smells of damp earth because of last night’s rain and those aromatic woods from the many fireplaces (the smoke billowing out of the chimneys adds to what I can only describe as the dreaminess of the season and the holidays to come).
As I took my stroll, I couldn’t help long for those bygone days, when the celebrations were big and the costumes outrageous. Those were special times, and I do believe there are more to come, but for now, I’ll enjoy this moment and be thankful.
My modest celebration comes from too much thought. I’ve been somewhat distracted because of the upcoming election and trying to understand those with a reckless disregard for the truth. There is so much at stake. Sadly, so many can’t see that because of their inability to separate facts from fear. People, especially those who are poor, voting against their interests, have left me dumbfounded. Why live happily stupid? I guess ignorance really is bliss. We should be discussing cognitive dissonance because the lies we tell ourselves are hurting us collectively.
As hard as it is, and as gloomy as I might sound, and I know I am not alone in my feelings, I am choosing hopefulness to helplessness and I hope you do the same, dear reader. Character matters.
To a few special friends… Turn off the news and go for a walk (many walks). Walking has the ability to heal your mind and heart, especially during these trying times. – paerki
