Elephant Sculptures
The next time you visit The Maryland Zoo, Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory & Botanic Gardens or Druid Hill Park – be on the lookout for colorful Elephant Sculptures on Auchentoroly Terrace. They are located on the grounds of Druid Hill Park, between Gwynns Falls Parkway and Liberty Heights. The purpose of these steel pachyderms is to calm traffic in one of Baltimore’s major intersections. In addition to making pedestrian walkways safer, they enhance the beauty of the Mondawmin community.
I finally got to see these life-size elephants today (two mothers and three babies) and I was wowed. The sculptures are painted on one side, and have designs created using recycled materials (bike pedals, stop signs and other objects) on the other. I truly appreciate the creativity and imagination.
This endeavor is part of the PNC Transformative Art Projects sponsored by the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts. To all involved – Mondawmin Neighborhood Association, community painters, crafts people, residents, Westside Elementary School students and especially Barbara Thompson (elephant sculpture creator and artist) – You did an outstanding job!
I’m in awe of artists because they help me tap into my own creativity. More importantly, they motivate communities, inspiring others to improve. I’ve always liked the quote from George Bernard Shaw – "Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable." How true! Thank you artists of the world, and even to the wannabes like me because we make the world a better place, too. – paerki
