Life Goes On
Wednesday’s A Joyful Noise concert at Emmanuel Episcopal Church had a somber tone, and rightfully so. The repertoire was carefully planned to honor the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and its many victims.
John Bowen (Musical Director / Pianist) and Jennifer Blade (Mezzo-Soprano) were moving in their tribute. Not A Day Goes By from Merrily We Roll Along (music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), I’ll Be Here from Ordinary Days (music and lyrics by Adam Gwon), We Live On Borrowed Time (words and music by David Friedman), and Jennifer’s personal account of where she was that day all tugged at the audience’s heartstrings, mine included.
As I sat there listening I kept thinking about time, and how sacred it is, and how we are so inclined to take it for granted. These days I make every attempt to thrive in the second, minute, hour and day, occasionally sharing those moments with the ones I love, with individuals who bring an infinite amount of joy to my world. It’s to you I say, thank you.
Time requires appreciation of many things too – of people and animals… art, literature and music, and nature. All that I mention is important to me, and that’s why I share so much of myself in the written word and through my photography.
I want you to follow my lead by making a record of your life, because each one is important, and all have something to offer. I learn so much from other people’s stories, photographs, etc. Through those personal challenges and triumphs, I am moved and inspired, and it enables me to push forward, and it helps me grow.
We must also value each other more. No matter who you are, we all deserve love, respect, and support from our fellow man (BTW… A simple smile and/or a warm hug go a long way). No one should be judged either. More importantly, we must consciously embrace diversity, and stop living in fear.
It’s understandable we would be sad about 9/11, and death in general, but when all is said and done – death and destruction must serve us in a positive way, too. It must make us stronger and more resilient, teaching us to live life with guts and glory, going the distance at all cost, finding joy and being happy.
Time is so very precious. These days our time would be better spent living our own lives instead of telling others how to live, but I digress. If you get anything from my ramblings allow it to be this… You are beautiful. Be present in the moment. Live life happy. Find your joy. – paerki
(The photos in this post are from my Wednesday afternoon walk through the city, visiting my favorites haunts… Baltimore Basilica, The Walters Art Museum, Central Library, BMA and Sculpture Garden, and various alleyways looking for new murals and graffiti. A special thank you to Wade. I truly enjoyed our conversation after the concert. Talking life, love and the pursuit happiness, now that always works for me, bringing me joy. Cheers!)
