Welcoming Eve
Just one more day, and it will be Christmas. These days, Christmas Eve gets just as much attention as Christmas Day. Why is that?
It might be because it’s the one last chance we have to make sure every detail is taken care of before the big day. I have witnessed many running around as if their heads were chopped off, stressing over what is to come instead of letting the chips fall where they may. I mean, come on, you can only do so much, and at some point you need to let go, breathe and learn to say, "I’ve done my best. Now it’s time for me."
I actually consider the Eve of Christmas to be the best of the two days. First and foremost, it tells me the finish line is near, and that can be reward enough, particularly if you’ve been doing lots of shopping, and overindulging in other holiday activities – concerts, parties, gift exchanges, etc.
What’s best about today is seeing the anticipation on everyone’s face, primarily that of a child who believes in Santa Claus. There is nothing like innocence, and it’s fleeting, mainly in today’s world. Therefore, we must preserve it for as long as we can.
Let’s not forget the traditions. There are many, and vary. I know some who will be getting their tree today, decorating in the evening, encouraging family, as well as friends, to participate. Others will be allowed to choose one gift to open, which I always find exciting. How about you? Of course, with all this comes merriment and more memory making, and what better way than with eggnog laced with rum. How many of these tainted little liquid treats will you devour?
When you think about it, it really does come down to memories, especially those of yesteryear. The holiday season is meaningless without them.
I have so many treasured mental souvenirs from Christmas Eve’s past, that if I weren’t allowed to store another that would be fine. My mission in life has always been about quality, never quantity, thus those intrinsic self-sustaining gifts of bliss that travel my soul throughout this season, making new keepsakes of the holiday that much sweeter.
No matter how you choose to spend Christmas Eve, make sure you do it with an honest, and open heart – one filled with good intentions. Something to think about… It’s not about having too little, just enough or too much. It’s not about having at all, but about giving – until it hurts. Everyone, enjoy Eve. – paerki
