Weekend Musings
Fall Things
Saturday – the perfect day for a fall walk. The air was cool yet crisp, the sky a bright blue, and everywhere I looked there were colorful trees and falling leaves.
I can’t believe how quickly the leaves have changed, going from a myriad of greens to deep reds, intense oranges and the brightest of yellows only within a matter of two weeks. It really is astounding! I was surprised to see a number of trees bare, representative of the doorway to winter.
What I enjoyed most during this particular walk was seeing the Halloween decorations. Ghosts were hanging on trees and skeletons on fences, front lawns were turned into graveyards, doorways were covered with spider webs and, my favorite, the simplest decoration of all – the pumpkin.
Pumpkins are incredibly versatile and can be anything you want them to be. They go from cute to scary to delicious all in a matter of minutes (maybe not minutes, but you get the point).
I look forward to playing with mine, placing them throughout my home to celebrate the season, carving and creating scary motifs in celebration of my favorite holiday – Halloween, and of course using them in some of my prized recipes. I especially enjoy roasting the seeds. Pumpkin seeds are the best, and are healthy too!
I hope, like me, you utilize this time of year to get outdoors. The months of October and November are perfect for long walks, especially with someone who brings joy to your world.
Turn Back The Clock
The end of Daylight Saving Time is on the horizon, as we fall back next weekend. Here’s to an extra hour. Use it wisely. Always remember – Spring forward, fall back.
In a world of uncertainty, when many are trying their best to bring others down, it’s important we (on occasion) take a timeout, abandoning ego and our need to compete, and replacing it with a devotion to the simple things in life. In other words, we need to get back to the basics finding inspiration in the most mundane activities and things.
I’m wishing all who read my words a happy and healthy week. My recommendation is that we all be present in the moment, taking time out to breathe, think and relax. No matter what you do, take your precious time to cultivate moments of joy, which will lead to longer lasting inspirations. – paerki

Mums
Yesterday it was all about mums (chrysanthemums). Everywhere I looked, there they were in bold brilliant colors: on front lawns, terraces, in hanging baskets, roadside stands, sitting on countertops in eateries, along the entrance way to supermarkets, and my favorite place of all, at the Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory.
An unplanned hike through my neighborhood took me on a journey that ended at the Conservatory. Lucky me, they had a simple, but tasteful mums display. I was in awe of how they were arranged, in small clusters, complimenting the permanent collection of brilliant lush greenery already there.
The flowers of spring and summer truly resonate with me, and are by far my favorite. Sadly, I forget about the mum. How dare I be so careless, reducing the mum to that of an insignificant dandelion. (But wait a minute! I love dandelions too!)
Yes, there are those who might think mums are overrated, but I don’t think so. They are just as majestic as the next flower, and worthy of consideration.
“Mums the word” might mean quiet, but mums are anything but. They are bold, brilliant and boisterous. They look for attention, and that’s just what they got from me on Sunday, and from many other admirers too.
