Where My Spirit Could Soar
Another beautiful day, a bit cool at times, but still remarkable. A friend and I took a trip to Carlisle, Pennsylvania to check out a turn-of-the-century table that she found on Craigslist. Yeah! I know… Craigslist! I was leery too because it can be hit or miss with online classifieds, but she has a good eye for spotting bargains, always doing her homework, and this was definitely a smart find. (Good job, friend! When you get bored with this table, pass it along. I’ll be waiting.)It was a two-hour trip using a combination of highway and scenic routes. There was much to see as we gazed out the window of the car to enjoy rolling fields, quaint pastures and miles and miles of farmland. It’s at this time when I get in touch with my inner farmer, longing to own a small farm (farmette) – a pipe dream, of course, but it could happen. Still, I see it as an opportunity to nurture my imagination and creativity.
It didn’t make much sense for us to immediately head back to Baltimore, which prompted a bit of exploring. Carlisle is a lovely little historical borough nestled in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It’s beyond special and extremely serene. I was captivated with my first glance, immediately taking notice of the architecture, tree lined streets, mountain trails, neighborhood paths and wildlife. (There is an exquisite 1800’s stone home with private lake frontage for sale. I’d purchase it in a minute. I just need to locate $565,000. Hmm, where did I put that winning lottery ticket?)What excited me most were the Letort Spring Run (a tributary of Condodoquinet Creek), which cascades through the central part of town and where one can fly fish, and the Yellow Breeches Creek, a trout stream popular with the locals. All was memorable, and adds to the community’s inviting qualities.
We made the most of our afternoon, spending it on the Appalachian Trail… shopping at a yard sale (I was surprised to see 8-track tapes and 45’s – boy did that bring back memories)… Feeding Canadian geese, and snapping photos of gorgeous swans, bright yellow wildflowers, lakes and streams, buildings and bridges, and people fishing, and anything else that caught our inquisitive eye, which was just about anything and everything. But hey, batteries only last for so long... As the day was winding down and we were beginning to make our way back home, we made a conscious decision to avoid highways and stay true to the scenic routes and byways, which aided in our ability to keep the momentum going. We made a few additional stops along the way, visiting other communities, historic graveyards, parks and gardens, and one special farm (Wolf Hill Farm) that is close to my heart because of the lamas, lambs and ponds.
I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. It had everything I was looking for and needed – blue sky, sunshine, joyful communication, laughter, wildlife, nature, and friendship. On Thursday, I was exactly where I was meant to be – outdoors where my spirit could soar, and did! - paerki
