Mural – Mural On The Wall…
Mural, mural on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?
All are beautiful in my eyes, as they are striking masterpieces that enhance many communities, especially those challenged by poverty and abandonment. They fill in the gaps for neighborhoods lacking funding and manpower, providing just a bit of hope when the odds are less than favorable. More importantly, they offer stillness and harmony to battered spirits that seek more out of life.
I am forever awestruck by the depth, color and size of each of these painted panoramas. I am always quick to stop, paying homage to the artist’s interpretation, appreciating their talent and vision.
It’s so easy to take these large works of art for granted. Don’t be so quick to dismiss their appeal with just a cursory glance. Just because they aren’t hanging in a museum doesn’t mean they are any less deserving of joyous accolades. I often consider the great outdoors one big museum, and the murals I come across just happen to be part of the permanent exhibit. How lucky are we?
Murals have the power to fortify our creative endeavors, helping to nurture us emotionally and mentally, especially a young person in search of motivation, but all must be ripe for the opportunity. I am hopeful they will set off a chain of events that aid us all in taking the next step, which is visiting a museum for even more inspiration, keeping the momentum going as often as we can.
The next time you are out and about and see a mural, don’t just pass by offering a quick glance and an off-the-cuff casual gesture, but stop and really look at the work. Study the canvas, colors, lines, shapes and rhythms. Allow yourself to feel the emotion. Search for the metaphors and true meaning the artist might be trying to convey. Dare to add your own interpretation, because it’s allowed. I think most artists would appreciate a different point of view. Always remember, art is very personal.
And for those who might be having a less than desirable day, allow these colorful canvases to heal your spirit because they have the power to do just that, but you must be open to the experience. I happened to be having a wonderful day, and these murals made it that much sweeter. To the artists, and those who commissioned the work – thank you for making my soul a bit more cheerful, my heart a bit happier, and my world a bit brighter. Enjoy! – paerki
