World Animal Day - 2010
Today is World Animal Day (October 4, 2010). Keep loving animals and spread the word of hope, so that we may protect all from evil predators. Clairol, Noxell and many other companies continue to use animals for testing, and of course who can forget the Michael Vicks of the world? Is he a changed man? Has he really been fully rehabilitated? Does he see how precious animals are? Only he knows, but I’m not convinced.
There must be harsher penalties for those who are cruel to animals, and we need to be more involved with our local agencies, like the SPCA, to make this happen. Kudos to those volunteers who continue to make a difference.
Ten debated areas of animal cruelty, which requires each of us to check our moral compass: Fur Trade, Animal Testing, Dolphin & Whale Slaughter, Seal Clubbing, Animals in Medicine, Animals as Food, Animals in Sport, Pedigree Breeding, Zoos, and Animals in Film. I’m not extreme in my thinking when it comes to my perception of what we need to do, but I do know right from wrong, and what’s appropriate and what’s not. I hope you know too!
An interesting statistic I read recently: Animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse… How sad is that?!
If you ever contemplate getting an animal, I hope you’ll think long and hard and consider adopting one at a local shelter in your area. Why not rescue a greyhound? Then, as always, have your new pet spayed and/or neutered.
Ways We Can All Save Animals: Never give animals as a gift… A better bond is developed when an animal selects the owner, without someone playing matchmaker… Take notice and take action when you see an animal being mistreated. Support a local shelter. A donation of $10 per year can make all the difference in the world… Provide consistent exercise for your pets… These are just a few things we can do. Education is key.
Here’s to all of you who love and cherish animals. Thank you for taking time out to care for the pet of a friend or neighbor... Some of my favorite people in the world are those who, when walking down the street, will stop and acknowledge another person’s furry bundle of love – petting, rubbing and talking to that which occasionally is misunderstood.
I can’t end this post without saying animals are indispensable. They deserve the same amount of love (if not more) as humans. If you’re ever inclined to go to the grocery store, don’t bring your dog along only to be chained to a fence (or any place), making it wait for you. How would you like to be chained and waiting? I didn’t think so! – paerki

Not too long ago I took a few photographs of one of my all time favorite friends’ pet, Lioness. She’s a remarkable cat in everyway. All who meet her fall in love. I know I did! Michael adopted Lioness from the local shelter. It didn’t take him long to realize both were on a journey and needed the other. It wasn’t luck that brought them together or the fact that Michael volunteers at the Maryland SPCA. There’s no question in my mind it was fate… destiny.
My friend, submitted one of my photographs of Lioness to the SPCA for their 2011 calendar, and mine was chosen for the month of February. How cool is that?! I mention this because I hope you’ll think about purchasing one. The SPCA needs your help! Each calendar is $15.00 (plus 90 cents Maryland state tax and $3.00 for shipping & handling). Visit the Maryland SPCA website to learn more about purchasing this colorful calendar, which is chockfull of beautiful pictures of pets. It will definitely put a smile on your face. It makes for a great gift too. - paerki
