Midday-Midweek Respite
The perfect midday, midweek winter respite, and a safe haven from the harsh elements – Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Mount Vernon’s Church of the Arts, was the perfect place to be on a cold wintry day.
It was bitter on Wednesday, and I was reluctant to attend the "Joyful Noise" concert. Because the last two winters have been unusually warm, I’ve somehow forgotten how to deal with cold temperatures. (Not really! The radiators, fireplace and blankets had teased me to stay in.) However, I managed to get myself together and was out the door in no time, hiking through the city. (Thank you for keeping me company, Norma!)
The concert was fabulous! Steve Yankee – jazz guitarist, played a variety of songs, all of what appeared effortless. The audience was unusually quiet after each song, listening intently, but the applause at the end of the full concert proved just how much they enjoyed his music. Thank you, Steve!
As always, these concerts put me in an artistic mood, prompting me to walk around the city with camera in hand, snapping photograph after photograph. My afternoon lunch date cancelled, so I made a stop at the Walters Art Museum, perusing the real artists, masters of their craft – Rousseau, Gérôme, Monet, etc. It was nice running into a few friends at the museum that I haven’t seen in awhile. (Let’s get together soon, Kathy and James.)
It was time to make my way back home, and I was enticed by the bus (I usually prefer to walk, but the temperature was dropping, and the wind was picking up). True to form, the MTA (Mass Transit Admiration) was consistent with buses being inconsistent (late or not showing up at all), which had me a little frustrated. That didn’t last long. There are times when you have to "walk away" from a situation to make it better.
I walked off my frustration, enjoying the trek home. I snapped additional photographs – finding something new in the familiar, met a few neighbors, and even saw a busker performing (how he managed to play that trumpet in the cold is beyond me).
I’m all about embracing the outdoors, even on a cold day. No matter the season, a walk/hike can help you de-stress, keep your bones strong, increase your motivation and, support your immune system. What I love most is the fresh air. Have you walked today? – paerki
