Easy And Effortless

Sunday marked the beginning of a new week, and I’m hopeful this one will be just as amiable, if not better, as the last. I feel as though I am having a super-sized holiday with a barrage of invites that have been nonstop.

It’s nice to be thought of, and I’m appreciative to the many who’ve extended invitations to me for holiday celebrations, trips to New York, impromptu dinner parties and, of course, those fabulous happy hours where everything is easy and effortless, and there’s just no way not to have a good time.

Yesterday was pretty exciting and chockfull of entertainment, and I was quick to indulge. However, I also recognized my need for a little “me” time. I like setting aside time to do things on my own, which often includes a hike on a trail, reading in a park, people-watching from a bench or taking a stroll through a museum, which is just what I did Sunday afternoon before heading to the Mayor’s Annual Christmas parade.

I initially was invited to a Hanukkah party, but opted for the latter. Thank you, Sharon, for the invitation. I heard it was a wonderful gathering. Maybe I can tag along with you and Brian the next time you guys are out and about.

My time at the Baltimore Museum of Art was just what I was looking for and is always time well spent. I love perusing the main collection, especially the European Art. I’m never bored, that’s for sure!

I love portraiture, especially that of Emilia Pia da Montefeltre by Raphael. I like how her expression is guarded, but the eyes are telling. Another favorite of mine is Venus and Adonis by Cornelis Corneliszoon van Haarlem. It’s a very symbolic piece.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Warhol’s later works on display (The Last Decade). I can’t say I’m a fan, but respect his contribution and appreciate his metaphors. His pop culture images from the 60’s are predictable, but nostalgic. No matter what, you’ve got to love an artist.

I enjoyed my walk over to Hampden, stopping by Sweet Sin Cafe in Remington for a gluten-free cupcake, and then picking up a hot chocolate to keep my bones warm. It really was a cold afternoon.

I’ve never been to the Mayor’s Christmas Parade, but the feedback I’ve received from friends over the years has always been good, thus my decision to check it out this year. I only stayed for an hour, but was pleasantly surprised. It was a nice crowd, and it was wonderful seeing families together participating (smiling, clapping, laughing and singing too). I couldn’t help feel a bit nostalgic, reminiscing of parades past. My childhood was filled with many, and we always attended them as a family.

I couldn’t leave Hampden without doing a little window-shopping. There are some beautifully decorated windows, and I enjoy seeing them year after year, especially at In Watermelon Sugar. No, they’re not like the ones in New York City (all glam), but they do make you smile and help nurture your holiday spirit along. (They do help nurture mine anyway!)

There are days when the cold agrees with me, and this was one of those days so I forfeited taking the bus and opted for a walk. I’m glad I did because I saw a few friends from my old neighborhood of Charles Village. We had a small conversation, but it was meaningful and ended with a hug. I also ran into a former patient who participated in one of the research trials I coordinated at the Johns Hopkins University. She was thoughtful to remember me after all these years and was kind enough to say I hadn’t changed much, that I was still funny and silly, a quality she admired.

My “me” time was over, and I was ready to join the world again, which had me hanging out with a few friends I haven’t seen in a month. As always, we picked up where we left off, laughing often. I had a great time last night, Kevin. You are far from boring – LOL. We really do have a gift for gab. Don’t you agree? I think silly is our middle name.

My time yesterday was well spent, and I’m thankful to all who enhanced my day making it that much sweeter.

Today it was back to the daily grind – posting resumes and looking for a job, getting a few chores done around the house that I like to put off to the last minute, and even spending a few hours cooking in the kitchen, making split pea soup and a new dish, brussels sprouts with sweet sausage. It’s something I created off the top of my head, and it is delicious. (I posted the recipe on my Celiac Blog.)

As always, dear reader, I hope you are making the most of your holiday. There is still much to do on my list… Seeing the Poinsettias at Longwood Gardens, ice-skating, walking through the neighborhoods in my area to see how people have decorated their homes for the holiday, going to concerts and much more. This time of year makes me appreciate the small things in life that are easy and effortless, for they bring me the most joy. Allow them to do the same for you. Cheers! - paerki

What would life be like without memories? It’s fair to say, there would be no life at all. Memory is our communication, reason, coherence, our action and more importantly, our feeling. Memories create our path in life, developing our psychology and leading us emotionally.

One of the best ways to create and store memories is with video. These simple effortless little snippets of time create diaries and become perpetual time capsules, which justify our walk on earth, telling all with great enthusiasm… I was here! I mattered! I lived! Please, don’t forget me.

Share your views, thoughts and opinions in the written word. Snap photographs so that your eyes can travel back in time, remembering the happy and sad moments that made you the person you were, are and became in life. But, whenever possible, capture video to enhance the memories you leave behind, so that others may pass the essence of your life on to future generations.

Mural - Mural On The Wall

All are beautiful in my eyes, as they are striking masterpieces that enhance many communities, especially those challenged by poverty and abandonment. They fill in the gaps for neighborhoods lacking funding and manpower, providing just a bit of hope when the odds are less than favorable. More importantly... Continue Reading

A Happy Life Begins At Home

My home is very important to me. My life between these four walls of privacy I value like no other. It’s immeasurable, and absolutely priceless. It’s an oasis with a cocoon-like feeling, shielding me from the outside manipulative forces of violence and pollution. It allows for creativity, free thinking... Continue Reading

Yielding To Signs

Sunday was the perfect day to be outdoors. The sky was a bright baby blue and absolutely stunning to look at, especially when it became the backdrop for seagulls and blackbirds, effortlessly soaring and plummeting in between wind gusts. It was magical, a hypnotic visual sensation of which I couldn’t... Continue Reading

City Of The Silent

Underground in permanent stasis they speak no more. Many have departed this life, leaving behind a legacy for all to enjoy, cherish, honor and, with a little luck and ingenuity, replicate. For me, this quiet region of slumber still has a pulse, and you can feel it when you walk these hallowed grounds... Continue Reading
I love photographs! They have this amazing ability to tell stories of fun places, special moments, memorable events, and exciting places. They give us reason to pause and remember friends, family, coworkers and so many others. One photograph can conjure up a flood of memories taking us on a journey. They help us remember the past, enjoy the present and ponder the future.

On a cold and rainy day I love sitting in my living room with a roaring fire, a glass of wine, classical music playing in the background and my many photographs scattered about me. I love sifting through what I call my special collection, which refers to my favorites. They remind me of the saddest and happiest moments of my life. They remind me of challenges and overcoming.

My large collection of images are a testament to a life lived. Life happens all around us so it’s important to collect special memories, and what better way than with a photograph.

A "Seagull" Of Memories

When I see gulls (known to many as seagulls), I think of the shoreline. I have wonderful childhood memories of playing in the sand in Ocean City; building sand castles, and coming back later in the day to watch the waves crash into my creativity, only to go back the next day to repeat the process. All Paths

The Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw said, "There is only one religion, though there are a hundred versions of it." It’s an interesting reference, and one I find intriguing. I am eternally curious and often entertained by religiosity and less inclined to follow any one particular faith because of... Continue Reading

A Culture Of Hate

Weekends fly by so quickly, or so it appears. However, this particular weekend seemed unusually long, and I think it had something to do with the gruesome events that took place on Saturday in Tucson, Arizona. I am shocked by the horror that unfolded, a young man throwing his entire future away, and all in the name of... Continue Reading

Goodbye. Hello.

Where did the time go? It flies by more quickly than I would like, especially as I get older (as I am led to believe by my friends of advanced years), thus justification for making each moment count. Each day really is a gift, and we must always remember this by showing our gratitude, perhaps with a... Continue Reading

1000

Wow! This post marks my 1000th blog entry. I can hardly believe it, but my fatigued fingers and burned-out bantam brain proves it so. It’s not my intention to come off sarcastic or even casual about what I consider a true milestone. I’m actually quite enthusiastic, finding it all just a bit... Continue Reading

Substance Is Sustenance

What can I say? I love substance in conversation and don’t get nearly as much as I would like. As my closest friends will attest, I love the carefully orchestrated gift of banter between people (especially two) who express passionate views of self and of the world at large. I respect individuals who are unafraid... Continue Reading
